‘Ballad of Genesis’: Two artists sculpting their bodies into one

The first time Genesis P-Orridge met his future wife, Lady Jaye Breyer, she put him in her clothes, makeup and a wig to make him look like herself. It was 1993, and the first step toward a personal project of physical transformation they would eventually call “pandrogyne.”

“She told me she saw me as a mirror image of her, and that we were meant to be two halves of one,” remembered P-Orridge, an artist and musician best known for his work in the industrial bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV.

That idea became truer than anyone could have imagined, as documented in “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye,” opening Friday at the Nuart for a one-week engagement. A decade into their marriage, the couple began a process of becoming one another through dress and cosmetic surgery, starting with matching breast implants on Valentine’s Day 2003.

The plan wasn’t for either of them to undergo a sex change in the usual sense. Nothing would be removed from their bodies, Breyer insisted then, only added.

“The body is not sacred. It is, as Lady Jaye used to say, ‘a cheap suitcase.’ And it carries around the real you, which is your consciousness, your mind, your thoughts, your aspirations and dreams,’” said P-Orridge, 62, speaking by phone from New York. “Surely, the container should be as wonderful and amazing and imaginative as you can make it.”

Their shared mission to become like two parts of a single “pandrogynous” being was an art project and an unprecedented love letter, but ended before it was completed when Lady Jaye (born Jacqueline Breyer) died of stomach cancer in 2007.

By then, experimental filmmaker Marie Losier had gathered eight years of footage on their lives together, after meeting the couple in New York and immediately joining them on a Psychic TV tour of Europe. She had footage of them onstage, at home, on the subway, strolling through Brooklyn. The final documentary collects those moments into a nontraditional, impressionistic whole.

The French-born director recognized a startling and touching story emerging very early. “There was an incredible bond between Gen and Jaye — a very unusual way of never letting go of each other’s hands, in the same hair and clothing, finishing each other’s sentences,” said Losier. “This was something that touched me even more.”

They identified as artists first, but by day Breyer was a registered nurse who worked with seriously ill newborns, and on some nights she also worked as a dominatrix for a select clientele. It was work that P-Orridge describes as “sensing and caring for people’s psychology and emotions.” She was a runaway at 14 when she landed in Manhattan in the 1980s and gravitated toward punk rock and the underground performance art scenes.

By then, the British-born P-Orridge was already a controversial musician and artist, whose Throbbing Gristle was once attacked as “a destroyer of civilization” by a member of Parliament. He was also a pioneer in modern body modification. When he had his genitals pierced in the early ’80s, it was front page news in the stunned British music press.

They were married 14 years, and P-Orridge refers to his wife’s passing as “when Lady Jaye dropped her body.” Her diagnosis and death came suddenly, and Losier had yet to record a formal interview with Breyer. But P-Orridge still draws on a library of sounds and effects she left behind, continuing their collaboration in Psychic TV and elsewhere.

When a briefly reunited Throbbing Gristle appeared at the Coachella festival in 2009, P-Orridge sang the group’s emotional “Almost a Kiss,” adjusting the lyrics in tribute to his late wife and kissing the tattoo of her face on his forearm. He says that some of their elaborate plans did come true.

“She used to say, ‘All I want to be remembered for is being part of a great love affair,’” said P-Orridge. “It made me really happy to see the film and realize Lady Jaye’s one true wish in life had been made possible.”

In other news: Angry Love productions has been bust preparing the third release in the “handmade” vinyl records series! Tony Conrad, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Edley ODowd recorded live at the HAU2, February 2011. Utilizing recycled colored vinyl, each slab is completely unique and comes housed in a recycled craft paper jacket emblazoned with a removable embroidered patch attached to the front cover. Also included is an 8” x 8” black and white booklet featuring photos from the concert as well 2 postcard sized replicas of the original concert poster (one design: one for mailing and one for keeping). Each package was lovingly stamped and assembled by hand. This release is limited to 230 copies only. Approximately 40 minutes worth of music.

Strange how we search for where we claim to copyright a lifestyle, but can’t find it. We are happy and excited to see a debate, with passion from some people finally which as to be step one before ANY attempt at finding land and committing everything we/anyone has to the project. Believe me we ARE aware of pitfalls…please note we feel we are polite and TRY to be positive no matter the tone of responses at times.
It would be nice to get beyond the criticisms and veiled negative remarks and focus on IF how any number of actual coum-unities of infinite, even contradictory, styles and structures could BE created with long term staying power.
Which remains the ultimate objective of OTTT.
That And give compassionate devotion and service to our species.

I often struggle to find the distinction between showing affinity, kinship and sympathy for someone’s chosen cause and “parasitism”. Thus my avoidance of utilizing iconography and symbols originating from the intellectual domain of another. Too often we mistakenly feel we are sharing a path when we are only perceived as infringing upon it.

is it just me, or is this contradictory? and really, language is a shared thing, you coin a word, and then only you can use it, ? seriously? this is from a person who proposed a light house as a strategic place… or how about another house where it does not work because people most likely not meant to live up each others asses… and even when sharing a single home, like with NY State and what is now eastern region of the US had rather large homes and plenty of space… but our idea of private space, private language, ect… the idea of ownership is born with capitalism as it has manifest… this real abstraction… there is no historical reason to think that we will simply collapse over night (utterly and completely, power erodes, transforms, reinstates, please read about Sovereignty (I recommend Derrida’s lectures on the matter)… anyway, I doubt there will be much left of a pandrogeny project IF the regime collapses, as the physical part of the experiment (inspired by a character played by Gene Simons, as well as Platonic notions, AOS, and others, of a split beings (and its M-Other; Lacanian Psychoanalysis—- famous for There is No Big Other, and There is No Woman… this is not about biology, but it does do with the merely as in mirror)) and being inspired by these peoples is not a bad thing, where do ideas come from if not the “world” (that which is not one), our worlds worlding (because worlds do, see the work of Mereleu-Ponty (not to simply name drop, but to give sources and allow others to evaluate to be on a more common or equal footing in regards to sources of language data, the individual is alway social, and language unless it be (onesidely) schizophrenic, is also common (its POWER and CONTROL that have to step in and say something, use force sometimes to keep it)…. moving on to or past binary theories of biology (as well as self, selfhood, and the body, again the body in the way articulated by Mereleu-Ponty, as well as Luce Irigaray) Evolutions Rainbow [another work that rethink our binary notion of biology, which we have heard Genesis think about) —-we do not agree with this or that, but as a whole, we do not see anyone as our enemy (as such), they will continually reveal themselves when they slap the food from your hand as you try to feed your starving brother… that is the face of evil, and people become IT. Anyway, it seems a shame that we cannot carry on a dialog to move this forward to something more constructive like how to continue to build decentralized, leaderless (if that is desirable) communities that at once rethink communes (as if no one else has been a part of a communal experiment…) and how one will be best able to SURVIVE with the decay or dissemination of the current dominant social order as it is oft referred too… anyway… this is the most time we will put into this here…
